MARRIAGE FEAST AT CANA JESUS’ FIRST MIRACLE

JOHN 2:1-11 THE WEDDING AT CANA

There was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding.  When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”  Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.”  His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.”  Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons.

Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim.  Then he told them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it.  And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from (although the servers who had drawn the water knew).

The headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now.”  Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.

REFLECTION:

Jesus tells His mother, My hour has not yet come…Jesus had not yet begun his public ministry…but then who can turn down a mother’s request….Mary wisely instructs the servants…Do whatever he tells you…Mary knows Jesus will attend to our needs when the time is right…we pray and our prayers are heard and answered, not necessarily, when and what we want, but in God’s time and according to what is best for us…

Mary’s faith is remarkable as it was from the very beginning, “Be it done according to your word!” Running out of Wine at a wedding feast was certainly not a life or death situation, Yet, Jesus responding to his mother addressed the need.  God is interested in every aspect of our life…are there some needs we don’t address to God…why not?…maybe we should try… and wait for the surprise…

Jesus’ first miracle is a sign of benevolence, a blessing that brings joy to humankind, a wedding feast, one that anticipates the wedding feast that awaits us all in heaven where we, the bride, join the bridegroom, Jesus and share in nuptial blessings for all eternity…they were married and lived happily ever after….are our wedding garments ready?

Jesus performed this first of His signs… and so the disciples began to believe in Him…what are the signs of Jesus’ intervention in my life…look closely…do I believe in Him like his disciples…do I give thanks for these moments of grace, especially times of conversion…

What was my life like while drinking the “inferior wine” of this world before Jesus, the “superior wine,” was served up to me…. How has the “superior wine changed my life…

If Jesus can change water into wine, just imagine the changes He could make in me if I just told him my needs and did what he told me as Mary suggests: Do whatever He tells you!…

Am I listening?…or is there too much noise to hear…what do I have to do to hear…to hear that small gentle voice Elijah heard outside the cave…God was not in the thunder, fire or earthquake (I Kings 19:11)

In this first miracle, Jesus goes way beyond filling the needs of people but fills the jars to the brim, overflowing with kindness and abundance, not just with wine but “superior” wine that goes beyond the needs…just think what Jesus will do for us in prayer, all that is required is the faith of Mary and obedience of the servers…
